Group Therapy is a form of psychotherapy involving one or more therapists who work with a group of patients at the same time. Many people attend individual therapy in addition to groups. While some groups are designed to target a specific problem (e.g., depression, substance abuse, grief, etc.), others are more generally focused on developing social skills and helping people cope through difficult transitions in their lives.
The Why
While the idea of joining a group may sound intimidating, many group members report being pleasantly surprised at how rewarding the group process can be. Participation in group therapy provides a support network and a sounding board to life challenges. By sharing and listening to others share, it allows the individual to put their own problems into perspective. It’s common to feel alone when you’re going through a difficult time; however, the group often serves as a reminder that you’re not alone and that others are going through similar experiences. The diversity within the group also provides a unique gift in that members are able to hear different perspectives and strategies of how to tackle challenges and transitions in life. Another great benefit of group is that is provides a safe and supportive environment to practice new ways of engaging with others and receiving constructive feedback.
When to Seek Group Therapy:
Group therapy is recommended to individuals with challenges that would benefit from having the support of others. Similarly, group therapy is great resource when a person feels that they are alone and that others don’t understand their experience. It is also an invaluable tool for individuals who are challenged in their relationships.
What to Expect
The group will meet in a room with chairs arranged in a circle so that each group member can see the other members. The first group therapy session will involve group members introducing themselves and sharing what they’d hope to gain through the group therapy experience.
The primary goal of group is to develop cohesiveness that allows group member to feel seen and accepted. Another goal is that through sharing, group members experience a decrease in stress, sadness, guilt, and loneliness.
